ABOUT SARAH MARTIN

Sarah Martin has been a dedicated Assistant County Attorney for more than 16 years. In this time, she has served as a criminal prosecutor, a civil rights lawyer for victims of discrimination, an advisor to the Metro Council, and now Director of the Civil Division.  As counsel for the Human Relations Commission, Sarah successfully advocated for victims of sexual harassment and racial/gender/sexual orientation discrimination.

She tried the first hate crimes case under Louisville’s anti-discrimination ordinance. Sarah served as lead attorney for the Jefferson County Board of Elections where she defended against challenges to our election process.  Her proudest courtroom experience was defending Louisville's minimum wage increase before the Kentucky Supreme Court. As a criminal prosecutor, Sarah handled the full range of cases that fall under the jurisdiction of District Court, from traffic tickets and misdemeanor trials, to probable cause hearings on felonies, including violent crimes.

For the past six years, Sarah has headed the Civil Division of the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, which serves as the law department for the city.  In this role, Sarah leads a team of more than 80 employees, including 40 lawyers. Sarah strives to hire and retain the best attorneys and provides them with the training and resources needed to empower them to do their jobs. She ensures this team provides sound legal advice to all Louisville Metro Government agencies, entities, and elected officials, so they can make informed decisions on the many issues facing the city.  Sarah recognizes the importance of a work/life balance and offering a family friendly workplace. She championed the institution of the policy allowing for 12 weeks of paid parental leave.

Sarah, an Ashland Kentucky native, moved to Louisville in 2000 for law school at University of Louisville.  Sarah graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in finance and a minor in political science.  She is married to Ted Steinbock and has 4 stepchildren and 2 grandchildren. In their free time, Sarah and Ted raise bees and enjoy hiking, running, and traveling.

Sarah’s LOUISVILLE

A Few of the Many Reasons Sarah Loves Our Community

Running and hiking in Louisville’s incredible park system, especially Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge.

Attending the terrific festivals that show off the unique character of Louisville’s different neighborhoods.

Exploring Louisville’s restaurant scene and the incredible variety of cuisine available to satisfy whatever food I’m craving.

Louisville has an amazing performing arts scene. I enjoy live music and local entertainers, especially Waterfront Wednesdays in the summer.

Like most Louisvillians, I love everything about the Derby festivities. Louisville is at its best and you don’t even have to go to the track to enjoy it.

Sarah’s Priorities
